You will marvel at the magnificent ancient ruins of the past and explore the modern architecture of the city. You will have the chance to visit the Acropolis, an exquisite landmark of Athens, exhibiting its glorious history along with the Parthenon, the Propylea, the temple of Athena, Nike, and the Erechtheion. Other equally impressive and historic sites are the Roman Temple of Olympic Zeus and the Tomb of the Unknown Soldier which is housed with the Parliament House in Syntagma (Constitution) Square.

Do not miss the chance to visit the Panathinaiko Stadium (Kallimarmaro), where the first Olympic Games were held in 1896. In Syntagma Square, as well as downtown, you can marvel at state buildings and neoclassical structures of the 19th century like the Catholic Cathedral, the Academy of Athens, and the national library. Last but not least, do not leave Athens without visiting one of the most exceptional contemporary museums worldwide: the New Acropolis Museum, which fully displays the magnitude and glory of Athens and its architectural and cultural style.

Day three

Group Tour of Mycenae, the Kingdom of Mythical Agamemnon

Day 3 of your Greece vacation starts in Athens. We will drive westwards along the scenic coast until we reach the Corinth Canal to take in its breathtaking views (Short Stop). The Corinth Canal is a junction of international sea transport that serves ships coming from the western Mediterranean and Adriatic en route to the eastern Mediterranean and Black Sea ports. You’ll continue along the coastal road of the Saronic Gulf to Epidaurus.

On the headland called “Nesi” at Palaia Epidaurus, you will visit the historic theatre of the ancient city. The theatre is well-preserved, in the shape it acquired during the latter years of its function. The theater is marveled for its exceptional acoustics which permit almost perfect intelligibility of unamplified spoken word from the proscenium or scene to all 12,000 spectators, regardless of their seating.

You will then depart for Nauplia, the first capital of Greece in 1829 (Short Stop), then drive to Mycenae. “Mycenae is the kingdom of mythical Agamemnon, the most important and richest palatial centre of the Late Bronze Age in Greece. Its name was given to one of the greatest civilizations of Greek prehistory, the Mycenaean civilization.” In the afternoon, it’s time to depart for Olympia for dinner and an overnight stay.

Although secluded near the west coast of the Peloponnese, Olympia became the most important religious and athletic centre in Greece. Its fame rests upon the Olympic Games, which was held every four years to honor Zeus. You’ll visit this archaeological site & the museum before driving to Rion, across the channel to Antirrion, onto the new state of the art suspended bridge, considered to be the longest and most modern in Europe. Situated at the foot of Mount Parnassos, within the angle formed by the twin rocks of the Phaedriades, lies the Pan-Hellenic sanctuary of Delphi, the home of the most famous oracle of ancient Greece. Delphi was regarded as the centre of the world. According to mythology, it is here that the two eagles sent out by Zeus from the ends of the universe to find the navel of the world met.

The sanctuary of Delphi, set within a most spectacular landscape, was for many centuries the cultural and religious centre and symbol of unity for the Hellenic world and seat of the Pythian Games, the second most important games in Greece after the Olympics. You’ll explore the archaeological site and museum, where you can see the unique bronze statue of the Charioteer dedicated to Apollo by Polyzalos, the tyrant of Gela, in 478 B.C. Monks descended the mountains in nets or on retractable wooden ladders up to 40m long to the fertile valleys below. Each community developed its own resources and by the end of the 14th century, the Grand Meteoron emerged as the dominant community. The rock monasteries have been characterized by UNESCO as a unique phenomenon of cultural heritage. Day Seven

Cruise in the Saronic Gulf - 3 Islands in One Day

One Day Cruise in the Saronic Gulf (07:15 – 19:30):

Our point of departure is Piraeus Port.

Hydra 1½ hour visit

Our first port of call is Hydra. A beautiful small island, yet so great in history that stands out among many others. Elegance, tradition and majesty. These are the three key-words that point out the beauty and significance of the island, that goes beyond what meets the eye. The cobblestone streets on the island, where donkeys are the primary mode of transportation, are lined with aristocratic mansions, forts, and churches steeped in history. The architecture of the island with the town of Hydra built in its centre on the imposing rocky slopes has remained intact and unspoilt by modern interventions to our very days.

Poros a 50 minute visit

Poros is the island of peace, romance and relaxation. It is lush with pine trees which reach the rugged shores and the sandy beaches. Approaching Poros by ship, from afar, we can see the historical clock tower on the highest hilltop. The architecture of Poros is a marvel right before your eyes. The beach houses are mostly neoclassical. The first houses were built in 1463 in the area around the clock tower.

Aegina a 3 hour visit (Optional Excursion)

The world famous temple of Aphaia (Athena) imposes at the top of a pine-covered hill in the northeastern part of Aegina. This temple constituted the epitome and prototype of the Parthenon, which was built by Ictinus and Callicrates. When the atmosphere is clear, one can see the Temple of Poseidon at Sounion and the Acropolis of Athens from the site of Aphaia. These three temples form an isosceles triangle (the holy triangle of the ancient times). On the island there is also the church of Saint Nectarios,a grand Christian Byzantine church,  which is one of the largest in the Balkan.
